“Last week was a long and momentous one in the presidency of Barack Obama. On Monday, he began a bombing campaign with members of an international coalition against ISIS and other terrorist targets in Syria, while continuing airstrikes in northern Iraq. On Wednesday, he addressed the United Nations and laid out his case in the strongest terms for international action against Muslim extremists. By Thursday, his anti-ISIS coalition had grown to more than 60 members, ranging from the Saudis, Jordanians, Emiratis and Europeans who flew missions, to the Irish and Swedes who wrote checks, to the Bulgarians and Egyptians who wished us well.

On Friday, he was back in the White House where he met us in the Diplomatic Reception Room for a conversation that ranged from terror networks to the American economy.”   To continue click on the 60 Minutes interview below.

Full announcement by President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder on Holder’s decision to resign Sept. 25th – [VIDEO & Holder’s Profile]

Hello Everyone:
Attorney General Eric Holder resigned yesterday.  Holder if the fourth longest serving attorney general in U.S. History.  In 1988, President Ronald Reaganappointed Holder to serve as a judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.  Holder has served in six presidential administrations.
In the 14 minute video directly below you will find the full remarks by President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder during Holder’s resignation announcement.  It’s quite touching because the two became good friends during President Obama’s first term.

Holder Resignation Well-Timed

By Sandy Fitzgerald
Sept. 26, 2014
Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation on Thursday had everything to do with timing, and came as a “quit-now or never-quit moment,” a former Obama administration official told Politico Magazine.Holder, who had reportedly been discussing his departure for 18 months with President Barack Obama and senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, announced his resignation on Thursday, saying he’ll remain on duty until a new attorney general is confirmed. He’s been under pressure to retire not only from political forces dissatisfied with his record, particularly when it comes to the Fast and Furious scandal, but by his wife, a physician concerned about a recent health scare.

But Holder’s timing was perfect, given the chance that Republicans could take over the Senate after the November election. By leaving now, confirmation hearings are certain to be held under a Senate that is still controlled by Democrats.

Had he waited, Obama could have had much more difficulty confirming Holder’s successor, the former official said.

“You didn’t want confirmation hearings in 2015 if the Republicans control the Senate,” the official said. “So if he didn’t do it now, there was no way he could ever do it.”

Holder told Obama his resignation plans over the Labor Day holidays, reports Politico, and Obama did not push back, although he faces a long confirmation battle to replace Holder.

This way, Obama has time to pick and vet Holder’s successor and push him through during the post-election, lame-duck session after the midterm elections.

Holder, the nation’s first African-American attorney general, is also leaving office on a high point after his trip to Ferguson, Mo., during the riots following the shooting death of an unarmed teenager.

But while the trip was well-received, Holder has been a polarizing figure politically, including being the first sitting Cabinet member to be found in contempt of Congress.

And Republicans are not sorry to see him go.

“I welcome the news that Eric Holder will step down as Attorney General,” said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, in an email to Politico. “From Operation Fast and Furious to his misleading testimony before the House Judiciary Committee regarding the Department’s dealings with members of the media and his refusal to appoint a special counsel to investigate the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups, Mr. Holder has consistently played partisan politics with many of the important issues facing the Justice Department.”

But Holder will leave a hole in the Obama administration, particularly when it comes to race relations, as the outgoing attorney general often said things that Obama would not say.

“He’s a race man,” said Charles Ogletree, a longtime friend of Holder’s and mentor to Obama and his wife, Michelle, when they were Harvard Law students back in the 1980s.

“He’s gone farther and deeper into some issues of race than the White House would like, but I know he has the president’s well-wishes,” said Ogletree. “It’s clear [Obama and Holder] believe in the same things.”

Holder has also become a close friend of Obama, even to the point of vacationing with the president and his family on Martha’s Vineyard. Their wives are also close friends.

Meanwhile, a top Justice Department official said Holder has no immediate plans for his retirement, but he does want to remain involved to some of the causes he embraced while in office, including working to “restore trust between law enforcement and minority communities.”

There are several names that may come under consideration to replace Holder, including Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, Jr., California Attorney General Kamala Harris, and even Obama’s first first-term choice, Janet Napolitano.

Why President Obama is in New York

Good Morning Everyone!

President Obama’s statements over the past couple of days as he leaves for the United Nations on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.  President Obama had ordered airstrikes in Syria the night before and when he arrived in New York later that day he spoke about Climate Change at the United Nations.   (see two videos directly below)
In the body of the September 24th letter from Secretary of State John Kerry; you will find by clicking on the link; the video Choosing Hope  President Obama’s Address to the United Nations.  The video at the top of the White House Blog captures the president’s closing remarks; his full remarks are in the 38 min. video located at the end of the White House Blog post. The full video also scans the audience of world leaders as President Obama references the nations in his remarks regarding the world’s responsibilities to the ISIL Threat.
I also included in my NCM Blog after Kerry’s letter; President Obama address the nation on the ISIL Threat.  If you missed it; this speech was one of President Obama’s best.

President Obama delivering a statement on the Airstrikes in Syria
White House, September 23, 2014

The White House, Washington

Good afternoon,

Each and every year, the world’s leaders gather in New York for a session of the United Nations General Assembly. Earlier today, President Obama spoke to them directly in an address that warrants the attention not only of those leaders, but of all Americans. It was clear, candid, and compelling. The President talked about the world as it is, and the world as we all hope it can be.

The President said that, for all the hard-won progress we see in the world, there is also what he today called a “pervasive unease.”

A deadly Ebola outbreak ravaging West Africa, Russian aggression in Ukraine, and the group of medieval murdering terrorists known as ISIL, which, left unchecked, could pose a growing threat beyond the region — including our homeland.

So when President Obama addressed the leaders of more than 140 nations this morning, he posed two fundamental questions that will help define both the world’s future and our own: Can the major powers set aside their differences and meet their responsibilities as leaders? And can the world reject the cancer of violent extremism?

The President knows the answer is yes — if we make it so. The way he answers these questions is an important illustration of the principles we stand for as Americans, and a window into the future we look to help build. See what he had to say.

He described the compelling need for a global response to global issues. For fighting violent extremism requires a broad coalition of nations willing to stand up for their citizens, and unite against those who seek to “divide us among fault lines of tribe or sect, race or religion.”

Defeating this extremism means defeating its false promise, instead embracing the real promise we see in the Middle East: investing in civil society and in the groups and people who are rejecting hate and division in favor of peace and tolerance.

In the past 20 months, I’ve traveled more than 550,000 miles through 55 countries. I have touched down in Iraq and Jeddah to focus on defeating the threat that ISIL poses. I’ve flown to Kiev and stood in the Maidan to reaffirm our commitment to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to shape their own future and make their democracy a success. I’ve worked with the leaders of Afghanistan to help secure the gains for which so many Americans have sacrificed so much over the past 13 years.

From Kabul to Cairo and Beijing to Juba, here’s what I can tell you: The world’s nations have more in common than sometimes we realize — particularly at a time when every turn seems to present a new danger. Everywhere I’ve gone, no matter how precarious the society or volatile the situation, I have seen the “longing for positive change” that our President spoke of today.

The United States, he said, “will never shy away from the promise of this institution, and its Universal Declaration of Human Rights — the notion that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of a better life.”

Nearly six years into his presidency, President Barack Obama is as committed as ever to the potential of that promise to light the world. And he’s right. And that is precisely why we are taking action against immediate threats wherever they threaten our security at the same time we work towards a world in which those threats will one day be replaced by opportunity.

This is a speech you need to hear from the President himself. Watch the whole thing below, and please make sure you pass it along to someone else who needs to see it.

Oprah presents Detroit Kitchen Connect leader with $25K grant
In the short year since Devita Davison started Detroit Kitchen Connect, she has helped many of Detroit’s burgeoning food entrepreneurs expand operations, bringing them out of their homes and into a licensed commercial kitchen. It’s an opportunity that, without the help of a group like Detroit Kitchen Connect, not every hopeful business can afford. So it’s no surprise that Devita and her group would be given a large grant to help grow. What was a surprise, certainly to Devita, is the fact that Olympian Amy Purdy and American icon Oprah Winfrey would be the people presenting her that grant. And in front of 10,000 or so people, no less. But there Devita was, Saturday, September 13, standing onstage on the second night of Oprah’s The Life You Want event at the Palace of Auburn Hills. As Oprah leaned into Devita and said that she’d hold her through this, Purdy presented Devita with a $25,000 Toyota Standing O-Vation award for her commitment to supporting local food entrepreneurs.Oprah’s people approached Devita months ago, crafting the story that while they had no plans for the footage, they’d like to come down and create a video piece on the work she and Detroit Kitchen Connect have been doing. Maybe they’d find some use for it somewhere in Oprah’s media empire, they said. Months later, they offered Devita tickets to the show at the Palace but, as she tells it, “I found out at 4:59. I got on stage at 5:00.”The video was played, a check was presented, and the crowd cheered. And while hearing part of your life story narrated by Oprah is no doubt thrilling, Devita is able to keep the focus on the city and the work being done here.

“The story was told in a way that shows Detroit is coming back, but that it’s also a city that is doing it from the ground up,” says Devita. “It’s an initiative accomplished through community capital. It’s grassroots.”

In that spirit, Detroit Kitchen Connect will be using some of the money to help community partner Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Cathedral in southwest Detroit. The church is in desparate need of infrastructure repairs after experiencing two to three feet of flooding during one of this summer’s heavy rainfalls. They plan on buying a better mixer for their bakers, too, along with a new oven. A local food entrepreneur scholarship program will also receive a boost. (inspiring video above)
