Hello Howard University Alumni & Friends of HU:
In my freshman year at Howard University, everyone knew that The Allen Sisters would become successful and so they did with Debbie Allen becoming best know as on Fame as dance instructor Lydia Grant, and her older sister Phylicia Rashad who become best known on The Cosby Show as attorney Clair Huxtable
–
The Allen Sisters have won numerous awards which includes several Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe Awards. Debbie Allen Dance Academy, winner of  the 2013 and 2010 Nutty statue out of 70 nominees.  The 2014 Nutty award will be announced December 22, 2014.

Goldstar National Nutcracker Award (Nutty) is awarded yearly for the Best Nutcracker Production (traditional or modern)

–
Kicking things of this week is The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker.” written, choreographed and directed by Debbie Allen, follows the blueprint of the original “Nutcracker” story as it finds young Kara (changed from Clara) and her family hosting a grand party on Christmas Eve.

After receiving the gift of a magical Nutcracker filled with hot chocolate, Kara drifts off to a happy sleep and begins her fantastic journey when the Nutcracker comes alive. (see video clip below from 2014 performance)

LET’s DANCE!

Places Kara and the Nutcracker explore include a hip hop Candy Cane Laneperhaps one the most memorable highlights were the hip-hop male dancers all dressed in red from 3 feet tall and up in Candy Cane Lane. In true Debbie Allen form they rhythmically danced up a storm! (see video clip below from the 2010 performance)  Not to be outdone, in exotic Bollywood the female dancers also dressed in red clear silk in the far off land of the Indian Rainforest were exceptional having mastered the art of soulful belly dancing with latent combinations of pirouettes!.  There is mystical Egypt, a dazzling Jazzland and a new South Pole surprise.  All of the dancing was outstanding from the classical, jazz and hip-hop this was an extraordinary event and well worth seeing again.

Three Wise Mice

Their adventure is guided by three wisecracking mice: Harvey, Schmink and Buckey (played by Allen). In addition to Allen, Raven-Symoné stars as Mouse Queen Myrtle.  The dance performers are students from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. The original score from the critically-acclaimed production play was made possible through musical contributions from Mariah Carey,Arturo Sandoval, Chau-Giang Thi Nguyen, James Ingram and Thump.

I recall when the 1983 issue of EBONY Magazine came out; the article praised Debbie for single handily bringing “Dance” back.  The article went on to say that “Debbie has so much passion when she dances even her eyeballs dance”.
–
That compliment is so true.  Even in my Howard U theatre class when the theatre teacher had our class critique a demonstration of a group of about 20 dancer performing in unison.  I recall clearly that one of the students critiquing seem shaken by one dancer whose passion transmitted like a laser beam — you guessed it — that dancer was Debbie Allen.
