Hello Everyone:

Team of Rivals:  The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by author Doris Kearns Goodwin explores how President Lincoln was able to achieve having the 13th Amendment passed. Putting group goals
(by recognizing others) above self-interest was the first and most important leadership concept.
Forbes contributor, Sebastian Bailey explains why it’s important to put group goals above self-interest.  “Put group goals above self-interest. When leaders use their power for self-interest rather than team success, cracks appear.  Recent research demonstrated that leaders prioritize group goals when their position is stable. But when the hierarchy was unstable, leaders who valued power withheld information and excluded skilled group members.  Their self-interested desire to preserve power was detrimental to group as a whole.
This leads to a major dilemma in an unstable political situation – focus on group goals and potentially lose further power;  focus on individual goals and potentially risk the whole enterprise.  I fear that many leaders in established business and start-ups default to focusing on individual interest and as a result undermine the very purpose of the initiative.  It’s a tough personal balance to strike, but a stronger focus on the group mission increases stability.”
Lincoln Quote for Thursday, February 21st:

“Don’t worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

Not every campaign will receive glowing reviews or win awards, and not everything you do may get the credit you believe it deserves. But those who continually strive to learn from mistakes and seek ways to improve performance will be successful.
