Michelle Obama is Poetry in Motion
Mrs. O Blog – 2008 post
From the beginning of acclaimed novelist Elinor Lipman’s involvement with the 2008 fundraiser, she knew she would write about Mrs. O. “I love that she wears dresses. She has such fun with her wardrobe.” As did Ms. Lipman in her witty poetic romp through Mrs. O’s sartorial high moments in the campaign and anticipation of the upcoming Inaugural Night. We [Mrs. O Blog] appreciate that Ms. Lipman felt this would be the perfect place for her poem to be published. It seems fitting; after all, we do like to talk about clothes.

Michelle, As Well  poem by Elinor Lipman

I write this poem on matters slight By which I mean, Inaugural Night. My shallow values hence exposed, But someone’s got to mention clothes. I’ll take you back as I digress To Iowa and that black dress. A silver belt around her waist Opponent’s pantsuits in disgrace. I viewed her garb and then I knew She won’t wear suits in royal blue. Man-tailored jackets grow on trees, And no more rhinestone flag pins, please. She won’t-nor will her dazzling girls- Be seen in Barbara’s two-strand pearls. I love her plastic boutonnieres We won’t see Reagan-red for years. The purple sleeveless dress: bravado That V-neck teal in Colorado? The fierce print at Invesco Field? A Denver high, her shoes low-heeled. The black and white seen on The View? Back-ordered till the year is new. Still, anchor people have to dwell More on McCain than on Michelle. But we who live by Project Runway Crave panache inside the Beltway. Support the arts (couture is one!) A modern Jackie will be fun. Michelle, our belle, icon long-sought A ticket back to Camelot. And better still, her strengths are mental, The Best Dressed list is accidental. Come January, let us pray We hail Inauguration Day. A snowy night, D.C. ablaze The end of fashion’s long malaise. Her man, their waltz, a splendid gown A masterpiece lights up the town. Chiffon or silk in black or white, Barack in tails…oh what a sight!

Custom designed silk jacquard frock in an
abstract Baroque wallpaper print, rosy pink &
gray with full skirt by Detroit designer Tracy Reese

Since January 2009; there have been three high profile world-wide events since 2009 that has garnered fashion designers Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu and Tracy Reese greater recognition and fame that every designer dreams of.
Cuban-American Isabel Toledo
Over a couple of decades, Isabel Toledo quietly became one of the most sought-after fashion designers in the business. But in 2009, she experienced overnight global exposure. At the inauguration that January, amid a sea of dark suits, First Lady Michelle Obama stood out in a chic chartreuse lace dress and matching overcoat designed by Toledo. (attached photos)

Taiwanese-born Jason Wu
Michelle Obama is a noted Jason Wu customer.  She was introduced to Wu by André Leon TalleyVogue Magazine’s editor-at-large, (click on Andre’ name to view his profile) who had been advising the First Family on their appearance. Michelle bought four dresses from Wu early in the year, wearing one of them for a segment on Barbara Walters Special shortly before the November 2008 election, prompting many in the media to consider her his “career-launcher”. She wore another, a custom-designed one-shoulder, floor-length white chiffon gown, at the inaugural balls on the night of President Barack Obama‘s inauguration. (attached photos)

African-American Tracy Reese
Enter on stage; Mrs.Obama, who strode up to the podium at the Democratic Convention on Tuesday night in a pink toile and blue-gray custom Tracy Reese printed frock and pink pumps, which complemented her gray manicure and dangly earrings. Her best accessory, though, was undeniably her famously toned arms. (attached photos)
The First Lady has worn a variety of fashions from many different designers over the past four years and I will blog about the economic impact later this month.  In the meantime; have a fantastic week.
